50 Free Things to do Instead of Spending Money
Are you ever sitting around on the weekend, bored, wondering what you can do instead of spending money? Does the first thing that pops into your head involve spending money such as shopping or catching a movie? You are not alone, and that is why I have compiled a list of free things to do!
If you have read my most recent posts, you should see a trend! We have been discussing saving money.
Without further ado, let’s get into the free things to do instead of spending money list!
Relaxing and Self Improvement Free Things To Do
1. Read a Book
When is the last time you read a good book? It is so relaxing, and if you visit your local library, it is free to do and an excellent alternative to spending money when you’re bored! Also, might I recommend the author, Dean Koontz!
2. Go for a Walk
Going for a long walk can serve multiple purposes. Aside from being another free thing to do, it is also good for our health! If you have a dog or two, don’t forget to take them with you!
3. Start a Journal
Writing in a journal can be quite fun. Also, if you are on this journey to financial freedom, writing some big wins in your journal can keep you motivated!
4. Start a Blog
Starting and maintaining a blog is quite enjoyable. I love doing this, and it takes up a substantial amount of time. You won’t find very much time to spend money if you are blogging!
5. Cook Something New
Search your pantry for ingredients and start cooking! Make something from scratch using your imagination or find a recipe online that you want to try!
6. Try a New Hairstyle
My hair is only a quarter-inch long so no new hairstyle for me, but for some of you, this can be a fun activity on the weekends!
7. Practice New Makeup Looks
A great free thing to do for the ladies!
8. Give Yourself a Manicure/Pedicure
This can be quite relaxing and will take a fair amount of time when you’re bored!
9. Write Down Your Goals
Writing down your goals is extremely important! I do this regularly. It keeps you going and accountable to achieve your goals, even though lately I am not doing very good on some of mine.
10. Crossword Puzzles or Sudoku
Go online and print them! Not only does it give you something to do, but it works our most important muscle, our brain!
11. Take a Bubble Bath
I don’t do this as I feel for me it is a colossal waste of time. However, if it comes to this or spending money, I would instead take a bubble bath lol!
12. Rearrange Furniture
Is this even fun? I don’t think it is at all, but it does liven things up a bit to move items around! Staying the same for years gets boring, and this is a free thing to do so get after it when you’re looking for something to keep you busy!
13. Visit a Local Park
Last time we did this, it felt like we walked 25 miles, but I am pretty sure it was only 5, or maybe even less! Get out there and enjoy nature instead of spending money!
14. Use YouTube Videos for Karaoke
I do this often, and my wife makes fun of me. How about you? Do you sing in the shower or karaoke to Youtube?
15. Take a Nap
My absolute FAVORITE thing to do is take a nap.
16. Throw a Potluck with Friends and Family
A potluck can be a super fun free thing to do. Well, mostly free with the expenditure required to prepare a dish for the potluck.
17. Go Fishing
Fishing is free after the initial expense of buying some equipment and a fishing license. One of my favorite past times!
18. Learn a New Language
Have you ever tried to learn a new language? Start working on it in your free time!
19. Movie Marathon on Netflix
I assume most of you have already cut your cable and therefore already have a Netflix subscription. If not, what are you waiting for? Twelve bucks a month for Netflix versus fifty or more dollars a month for cable?
For example, the other day I got bored so I watched Gleaming the Cube! Trust me, it was way better when I was a kid!
20. Practice Yoga
Have you ever done Yoga? It isn’t easy! You will feel better if you do it after each session, so give it a try!
21. Play Card Games
Phase 10 anyone? I love that game!
22. Download Free Phone Apps/Games
I can waste hours a day playing cell phone games! Don’t even get me started on my several month-long addiction to a game called Ball Blast!
Career and Extra Income
23. Take Online Surveys
I spend at least 45 minutes every single day doing surveys. It kills some time, and I earn some extra cash instead of spending money! I routinely make more than 100 dollars per month! Check it out; you have nothing to lose!
Or, head on over to Swagbucks, do some online shopping or play some games, even watch some videos and get paid!
24. Take Free Online Courses to Learn New Skills
Once you learn some new skills, let’s take this a step further and do some DIY projects! Also, with the right new skills, you can potentially get a promotion at work and a raise!
25. Update Your Resume
In a few years, I will be doing a lot of this. If you are thinking of switching careers, this is a must-do item and will keep you from spending money!
26. Mystery Shopping
Mystery shopping is a great way to earn some extra cash in your spare time.
27. Sell Unwanted Items
I leave this up to my wife. She is good at it aside from being a borderline hoarder that doesn’ want to sell anything!
Household Free Things To Do
28. Clean Out Your Closet
I don’t even want to talk about how long it has been since I have done this! When you’re sitting around bored, instead of spending money, get up and clean that closet!
29. Wash Your Car
Do any of us do this often enough? I know I sure don’t and need to start doing it more!
30. Make a Meal Plan
Making a meal plan will not only save you money because it’s a free thing to do, but it will also save money on your expenses by better organizing your grocery store trips!

31. Organize Computer Folders
I don’t know about you, but my files get so unorganized! I save files, download files, move files around and before long I realize that my files are hard to find! Spend some time organizing your files on your computer!
32. Plan Your Outfits
I am sure plenty of you already do this. My wardrobe is pretty easy currently as I am told what to wear every day! Once I retire from the military, I have no idea what I am going to do! Probably start planning it out!
33. Give Your Dogs a Bath
This free thing to do can kill some serious time! Have you ever tried bathing a Great Dane?
34. Teach Your Dogs New Tricks
I always enjoy doing teaching the dogs new tricks! So much fun!
35. Organize Important Documents
There is a theme with some of these items on this list. I am trying to put some of the things I neglected for way too long on here! Hopefully, not only will it provide you with the motivation to do it, but it will also make me do it!
36. Clean Out Email
My email is pretty good, but my wife’s, on the other hand, is ridiculous! I don’t even know how she can find anything in there! If you get bored, clean out your email for a free thing to do!
37. Clean House
Who wants to do this? I’m not sure any of us do, but it must be done, and it is sure better than spending money! If you get incredibly bored on the weekend, maybe you will have the cleanest house on the block!
38. Clean Your Garage
I always tell myself I am going to do this at least monthly! Let me tell you that doesn’t happen! However, I have gone out there numerous times when I have been extremely bored and knocked this out! Within a week, my wife goes out there and destroys it!
39. Work on Your To-Do List
Who wants to do this on your weekends or days off work? Not me for sure, however, it needs to be done, and it’s a free thing to do!
40. Shop Insurance for Better Rates
I cannot stress this enough! Shop around because I can almost guarantee you will find better rates, unless of course, if you have already done this.
41. Create a Budget
Having a budget is of utmost importance for paying off debt! If you do NOT have one, start it right now! I cannot stress this enough.
42. Evaluate Your Spending Habits
Knowing where your money goes is vital for creating a budget. Feel free to read this article I wrote about our spending.
43. Round-Up All Your Spare Change
I plan on doing this very soon to see how much money is in my desk drawer, not serving any purpose!
44. Create a Debt Payoff Plan
Have you thought about this? Did you plan on just paying extra to your debt and it would magically be paid off!
You NEED a plan for paying off your debt! One of the first things you need to decide is if you will use the Debt Snowball: Best Debt Payoff Method? Or the Debt Avalanche method!
45. Create a Vision Board for Your Debt Payoff Plan
After you have created a solid plan for paying off your debt, create a vision board! A vision board can keep you motivated and on the right path to financial freedom!
46. Check Your Credit Score
I use Credit Karma for this. Knowing your credit score is essential! Read this article for more info!
47. Clip Coupons
I suppose most of the time, coupons are part of the grocery store apps and there isn’t much clipping going on nowadays. Just know that with a little digging you can find them and save a substantial amount of money!
Community Free Things To Do
Volunteering is such a fantastic thing to do! There is no better feeling than when you help other people who are maybe not as fortunate as us! Please, find an opportunity to volunteer for anything that you believe in.
49. Free Concerts
You can find free concerts to attend depending on where you live. For example, we have free concerts on the beach frequently.
50. Community Festivals
There are free community festivals you can attend. Just google search for your area!

This list isn’t all-inclusive and some of the things on this list aren’t for everyone. The important thing is to find some activities to do instead of spending money!
